JOHN WHITTAKER
John Whittaker, born in Pitt County, came to Standing Stone with his wife, Vina and family around1806. The last home he built was on what is now the corner of Old Walton Rd. and Elmore St. Vina died in 1832 and was the first person buried in the Whittaker Cemetery. John remarried to Dila. They had more children. In 1853, Whittaker sold the farm to his son, Thomas Jefferson and moved to Alabama. In 1893, T.J. sold most of the farm to the Cumberland Mountain Coal Co., which incorporated the new town of Monterey.
JOHN SEHON
John and wife, Mary (Polly) Graham came fro Jefferson County and established an inn or stand on the Walton Rd., 2.7 miles from the Standing Stone, in 1806. Frequent notable travelers were the likes of Andrew Jackson, both before and during his presidency. John Sehon died in 1809, leaving his wife and children to continue running the inn. Mary remarried to Benjamin Walker.
ALEXANDER OFFICER
Alexander Officer was born in Pitt County, NC. He and wife, Henrietta Lancaster Officer opened up a stand or inn on thw Walton Rd. at the junction of the Waltond Rd. and the Emory Rd., present location is the eastern city limits where the Old Walton Rd. meets the Clarkrange Rd. Alexander hlped build the Emory Rd, which ran from Standing Stone to Montgomery, then the county seat of Morgan County. He collected tolls for the Emory Rd. at its western end. Alexander was killed by robbers in the night, in 1819. Henriettta remarried to Dudley Hunter and moved to Dry Valley.
MATTHIAS WELCH
Matthias Welch came with a caravan of family members and settled just west of the Standing Stone, in a hollow on the southern side of the Walton Rd., in 1811. The Welch wagon caravan made it to Crab Orchard, when Matthias Jr. decided to go back to Rutherforf Co., NC to marry Susan Ricketts. Some of his brothers and sisters had previously married into the Ricketts family.
AUGUSTINE LEE
Augustine and Rachel Nichols Lee came from Rockingham County, NC, in 1821 and settled a couple of miles west for the Standing Stone, along the Walton Rd.
JAMES STAMPS
War of 1812 veteran James Stamps and wife, Elizabeth Stamps came from Alabama and settled at the head of the Calfkiller River Valley below Bee Rock, in 1816.
GEORGE HENRY
A major in the state militia, George and wife, Ann Fine Henry came from Cocke Co., TN and settled in the Calfkiller River Valley, near Board Valley, in 1812. Born in 1760, in Virgina, he died just a few years after moving into the area, on March 4, 1817.
JOHN HENRY
The son of George Henry John Henry was born in 1780 and moved with the Henryfanily to the Calfkiller River Valley, in 1812. He and wife Susan Weaver Henry are buried in the Henry Cemetery, just below Monterey.
ISRAEL SHAVER
The Shaver family cane from Virigina and settlrf near Meadw Creek, just east of Standing Stone.
THOMAS DYER
The Dyer family settled near Mill Creek, in 1825, along the Emory Rd.
ROBERT JOHNSON
Robert Johnson and three sons came their families and settled along the Walton Rd., in 1800. They opened a stand or inn at the present site of Mayland, in 1806.
